PRINCIPLE OF WORK: LEAKWISE systems for detecting and measuring the thickness of a hydrocarbon layer on water use a technique to measure the absorption of electromagnetic energy in water. The measuring encoders, consisting of an antenna float and pulley weights, float on the surface of the water, with the antenna ring always immersed in water equally deep. The higher the absorption of energy in water, the more measured energy is fed into the antenna. As water absorbs more energy than hydrocarbons or air, the amount of energy absorbed must be higher. If the antenna floats partly on the water and partly on the hydrocarbon, the energy absorption will be smaller in proportion to the thickness of the hydrocarbon layer on the water. The thickness of the hydrocarbon layer on the water is defined through a 4 – 20 mA output and lower and upper alarms can be set in the measuring range.
